As part of a scheme to promote the use of electric vehicles, Transport for Wales (TfW) has chosen SWARCO UK Ltd to install new electric charging points.
TfW are keen to reduce the production of carbon across their area, with a big drive to increase the use of electric vehicles (EVs) being used.
One big issue is the charging points and their location, especially in areas such as Wales with hilly terrain and sparsely populated villages and towns.
To combat this, TfW, thanks to funding by the Wales Government, has contracted SWARCO UK Ltd to install 21 electric charging stations at brand new locations. Is it hoped this will boost the number of journeys made by EVs, in particular, on longer trips.
To ensure the maximum benefit from these new points, each one is located along the Welsh Strategic Road Network at intervals of 25 miles.
The Local Authority areas of Ceredigion, Powys, Denbighshire and Gwynedd will see points built in car parks they manage in the following places:
- Cardigan
- Newtown
- Welshpool
- Crickhowell
- Machynlleth
- Talgarth
- Corwen
- Dolgellau
- Porthmadog
- Blaenau Ffestiniog
- Bala
- Llangurig – in a public house car park
Decarbonisation Programme Manager at Transport for Wales Steve Ward commented: “We are delighted to appoint SWARCO to develop rapid electric vehicle charge points at 12 rural locations.
“We know a lack of facilities is a real barrier to people having the confidence to change to an electric car and can even influence decisions about holiday destinations.
“With charge points every 25 miles and simple contactless payment facilities these problems are now being tackled, at what is just the start of a longer-term ambition to see thousands of extra charge points delivered across the country in coming years.”

When will Radyr train station car park get electric car charging points?
While this is good news for electric car drivers, it seems a shame they aren’t planning to install slower 3 or 7kW charging points in station car parks where you could leave the car charging for several hours or a day while you go somewhere on the train and come back to a fully charged car.
No wonder more we are seeing more electric cars and electric vehicles on the roads.

So no chargers on or near the Heart of Wales line then. If there were even fewer people would use the train service – only ONE day in the last month have all the trains run and been on time!
