has announced that a brand new cycle hub is now completed and ready to use by rail users at railway station, on the Tees Valley Line, in North Yorkshire.

As part of a £500 million project to upgrade and improve facilities to stations across the North of England and Scotland which TPE serve, a review of the facilities at Thornaby Station was carried out.

Following feedback, the decision was made to build a new bike storage area, promoting the use of this zero-carbon active travel mode of transport.

Features of the new hub include:

  1. Capacity to store 34 bikes – with four of these spaces fitted with E-bike charging stations
  2. Maintenance area to allow users to fix issues with their bike
  3. CCTV to deter crime and increase security
  4. Location – safe and easy for rail users to store their bikes

Funding for this facility has been provided through a joint partnership between TransPennine Express, Department of Transport, Sustrans and Stockton-on-Tees Council.

Accessibility and Integration Manager for TransPennine Express, Natasha Marsay said: “We are thrilled to have been able to provide a brand new, bespoke cycle hub for the local community thanks to this partnership.

“We hope that this new facility will encourage those travelling to leave the car at home and cycle to the station before making their journey by train.”

Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, Councillor Mike Smith said: “The new cycle facilities are a welcome addition to Thornaby Station and they are sure to be well-used by residents across the Borough.

“Cycling to the station rather than driving is a great way to help the environment and also keep yourself fit and healthy. It's something we should all consider doing if we can.

“It'll be great to see the station filled with bikes soon.”

Executive Director, England, Sustrans Matt Winfield said: “Combining the convenience of cycling with the speed of the train gives people the freedom to get places quickly and easily. This new facility will make it easier for people to choose to cycle which is healthier for them and better for our environment.

“We were pleased to work with the to help make this facility happen.”
