The village of Old Kilpatrick in West Dunbartonshire, Scotland will soon see a full railway bridge replacement, with road and rail users as well as pedestrians advised to plan ahead to avoid delays to their journeys.
Last year in 2020, Network Rail discovered the railway bridge crossing the Dumbarton Road had deteriorated to the extent where speed and weight restrictions had to be introduced.
To improve the situation, a temporary bridge was erected to allow lifting of the restriction, costing £1 million.
Working with West Dunbartonshire Council and other stakeholders, Network Rail are now in the early stages of building a brand new bridge, ensuring the bridge and line can provide train services in the long-term for local people.
In order to carry out the removal and installation work, a road closure on the Dumbarton Road will affect motor vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians at different times.
Dates the road will be closed for different users can be found below:
- Motor vehicles – Monday 2nd of August to Friday 26th of November – A diversion route via the A82 Great Western Road will be in place
- Pedestrians – Friday 24th of September to Friday 26th of November

Programme Manager for the replacement work Jeremy Spence said: “Our investment in the temporary bailey bridge allowed the route to remain open to traffic for the last year, however, we now need to replace the existing structure with a permanent bridge that will benefit the community in the long-term.
“We understand that there will be some disruption in the short-term to road users and nearby communities. And, while the bridge will be closed to vehicular traffic until November, we are pleased that we'll be able to keep it open to pedestrians for the vast majority of the works.
“We are very grateful to all road users and the wider community for their patience while we carry out this vital work.”
