Transport for Wales has confirmed that they are beginning a scheme to install defibrillator devices across the majority of their stations.
Automated External Defibrillator (AED), commonly known as just defibrillators, are life-saving devices that are used on someone suffering sudden cardiac arrest.
They work by analysing the patient's heart to assess activity, followed by providing an electric shock to try to get the heart to beat in its normal pattern.
Increasing chances of survival, statistics show people who have received help from a defibrillator in the first three minutes after a cardiac arrest have a 70% better chance of survival.
To ensure rail users and the public have access to these life saving devices 24 hours a day, seven days a week, Transport for Wales are undergoing a project to install 200 defibrillators across their stations.
Often being in central locations of towns and cities, train stations provide an ideal spot to locate equipment such as defibrillators.
The defibrillators will also be registered with The Circuit, the national defibrillator network and the ambulance service.
Transport for Wales Rail Infrastructure Director Karl Gilmore commented: “We have long recognised how important defibrillators can be as a life-saving tool, so we're delighted to now be in a position to install these devices across the Wales and Borders network.
“The safety of our customers and colleagues is our top priority and as part of work with the provider Aero Healthcare, our staff will be offered training on how to use the defibrillators.
“We want to make the Wales and Borders network the safest in the UK and an important part of this is having the right facilities at our stations to help people in the case of an emergency.
“We are also working with various healthcare colleagues and charities, who are helping us plan how we can provide training on this life-saving equipment, deep into our communities.”
