has released a statement after it says it was ‘left with no option' to cancel and amend a number of train services this Sunday.

Northern says that the reasoning behind the cancellation was that it has seen an increase in staff testing positive for COVID-19 and some of these have been drivers and conductors, who are essential for running a train service.

Chris Jackson, Regional Director at Northern, also thanked passengers for their patience.

In a statement, Chris Jackson said: “The coronavirus pandemic is still having a significant impact on many parts of society, including the rail network.

“During the past few weeks, and in line with the general increase in cases across the north west, we have seen a significant increase in the number of employees who have either tested positive for COVID-19 or have had to enter a period of self-isolation.

“Some of these colleagues are drivers and conductors and, as a result of the necessary COVID procedures, we had no option but to cancel a number of services this weekend.

“We are doing all we can to provide the best possible service for customers in extremely difficult circumstance and I'd like to thank our customers for their patience and understanding. I'd also like to thank Northern colleagues who continue to deliver a valuable service that is keeping the north of England on the move.”

  • Perhaps Northern should bring in more extra trains including inheriting 15 Class 185s from Transpennine Express to be used in the Northeast and increase more extra trains and to reinstate Sunday services on its entire network.
