Passengers are being urged to plan their travel during UEFA EURO 2020 which will run from Friday the 11th of June to Sunday 11th of July 2021.
EURO 2020 will take place at both ends of the West Coast mainline and will be a key rail route for football fans during the tournament.
Services on and around Sunday the 13th of June and Friday the 18th June are expected to be busy as England will be playing and the latter date will be England vs Scotland in the group stages, which no doubt will be a very well attended and supported event.
Journey updates will be provided by train companies and staff will be on hand to help out, but extra people making journeys to the football matches is possibly going to affect social distancing measures.
Passenger advice is to book ahead and get seat reservations where possible. This is very important as some long-distance services are reservation only and a number of trains are already fully booked.
It is also pointed out that some matches will finish later than usual so people are being asked to plan both parts of their journey carefully with this in mind and to also book in advance.
Tim Shoveller, Network Rail's North West and Central region managing director, said: “It's great to see EURO 2020 take place on home soil and that games won't be behind closed doors. The rail industry has been planning for this for many months so that ticket holders can travel in confidence to the fixtures at Wembley and Hampden Park. We do urge people to plan ahead and book travel in advance with the West Coast mainline expected to be busier during the tournament. As always, people should follow government safety advice like wearing a face covering on trains and in stations unless exempt and take advantage of National Rail's journey alerts service.”
Nick Westcott, operations director at Avanti West Coast, said: “As the UK welcomes EURO 2020, we're working with UEFA and industry partners to make trains and stations safe for everyone travelling to games at Wembley and Hampden Park. Any fans are advised to make sure they have the information they need to make the best journey choice and consider alternative options.
“With just four days to go before the tournament kicks off, we strongly urge fans to only travel if they have a reservation, plan their trip in advance using the National Rail Enquiries website, and leave plenty of time for their journey.”
During a journey, people can take advantage of National Rail's Alert Me by Messenger service and receive live updates, including crowding information which will be a very useful tool when travelling during this time. The service will also give updates on delays or disruptions for your journey and whether you are eligible for compensation, alternative trains should your train be delayed or cancelled and transport options to help you complete the first and last mile of your journey.
