Since the heaviest aggregates train ran over the West Coast Mainline earlier this year, Freightliner has continued to build on its position of the leading operator of the heaviest jumbo trains on the network.
The Jumbo Train operated from Tarmac's Tunstead Quarry to London's Wembley Yard back in March 2021.
Now, Freightliner has worked with Network Rail to consistently trial weekly jumbo train services, weighing more than 4,000 tonnes, including a train weighing in at the maximum 4,230 tonnes, the latter featuring 44 wagons of aggregate to London terminals including Battersea, Paddington, Park Royal and Bow.
The services currently remove 140 lorries from the roads each trip and save 112 tonnes of CO2e compared to road transport.
The operator said “Freightliner is proud to have worked innovatively to challenge what is achievable on this route in collaboration with Network Rail and Tarmac.
