Network Rail have confirmed they will be carrying out work on Oakham's Level Crossing in Rutland, improving the crossing for both rail and road users.
Following examination, the condition of the tarmac and rubber surfacing was found to be due for repairs, with work due to take place starting from 7 pm on Friday 4th of June to 6.15 am on Monday 7th of June.
In order to undertake this work, the section of Melton Road, which crosses the railway, will need to be closed between the above times. Diversion routes will be clearly marked with signs.
Over the two days of closure Network Rail will first remove the current tarmac and rubber road, complete alterations to the track while access is easy, then finally fit new rubber panels, lay fresh tarmac and fully line up with road markings.
Rail, road and pedestrian users will greatly benefit from the new surfacing, ensuring a smoother ride and more even surface for pedestrians, making the crossing safer for all.
Rail replacement buses for CrossCountry trains will be operating between Melton Mowbray and Peterborough, with anyone needing to or planning to travel they are advised to check ahead as journeys may take longer.
Route Level Crossing Manager for Network Rail Vinny Briggs said: “This work to improve the road surface at Oakham level crossing is vital so that people can continue using it safely and reliably for years to come.
“We've planned this project to keep disruption to a minimum and we're sorry for any inconvenience the road closure causes for people in the community or for passengers who need to travel.”
Earlier this year an £856,000 project on the footbridge at Oakham was completed.
