has confirmed that a planned road closure will be two weeks shorter following the cancellation of major event near Stamford, Lincolnshire.

A railway tunnel in Stamford is due for vital work to strengthen the walls, ensuring the line running through is safe for both passenger and freight trains for many more years to come.

Key to carrying out the necessary work is the closure of Barnack Road, which runs above the tunnel.

Originally, working with Lincolnshire County Council to reduce delays and congestion, Network Rail had planned for the road to be closed between the following dates:

  1. Saturday 3rd of July to Monday 23rd of August
  2. Saturday 11th of September to Monday 15th of November

After the recent announcement that the 2021 Burghley Horse Trials have been cancelled and not taking place, Network Rail has been able to reduce the second closure.

This now scheduled to take place between Saturday 11th of September to Monday 1st of November. This is due to there being fewer interruptions. Preparation work has already begun.

Route Director for Network Rail's East Midlands route Gary Walsh said: “The work to strengthen Stamford Tunnel to make sure it remains fit for purpose for train services to run safely and reliably long into the future inevitably means some unavoidable disruption for the local community.

“We've worked closely with Lincolnshire County Council from outset to minimise this and agreed to pause work during the busy few weeks of the horse trials. Now the event is not going ahead, however, we're glad to say we can continue working throughout August and September, finish earlier and bring forward the re-opening of the road.”
