Two volunteers, Mike Crabtree and Peter Whiteley, recently visited the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways in Porthmadog to see progress on the new underframe, which is being constructed at Boston Lodge Works.

Significant progress has been made in North Wales, with the majority of the new underframe now being completed.

The cab underframe is away being rolled to the correct corner radius but will return shortly once this work is complete.

Crich Tramway Village said: “Thanks to Paul Lewin, Jon Whalley and the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways team for making them feel very welcome and allowing them to share the work in progress.”

Back in November 2020, it was announced that the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways had been chosen as the preferred supplier of the new underframe of Blackpool Tram No. 298.

The tram was withdrawn from service in 1972, needing a full body overhaul, but with Blackpool moving towards One Man Operation, it was considered surplus to requirements. In 1976, it was sold to Keith Terry and the Blackpool Railcoach Fund for restoration and display at Crich.

After lockdown restrictions were eased, Crich Tramway Village is once again open for visitors, and more details can be found over on their website.
