Passengers are being advised to plan ahead this late May Bank Holiday, as major railway upgrades take place between the 29th and 31st May.

Work will take place on the West Coast Main Line to improve journeys for both freight and passenger trains.

Work includes:

  • Track replacement at Worcester, Halton, Harrow and Wealdstone, as well as Cheddington.
  • Signalling upgrades at in Scotland and Trafford Park in .
  • Track foundation upgrades in Crewe and Carlisle.

Whilst the work takes place, no direct trains between and Liverpool or Scotland will operate.

Affected passengers will need to change trains or use rail replacement buses.

Tim Shoveller, managing director of 's North West and Central region, said: “The essential improvements taking place over the late May bank holiday will build on the great progress already made this year to improve the railway as passengers return in greater numbers.

“While this will not be as disruptive as previous bank holidays, some journeys may still see bus replacement services in operation. I'd urge people to check National Rail Enquiries in advance of 29-31 May so they know exactly what to expect from their journey.”
