Ltd has announced the four organisations they are inviting to tender for a large contract towards HS2's Phase 1 and 2a.

One of the key components in the construction of HS2 is the electric trains which will reduce journey times and produce a very low carbon footprint, with carbon produced per passenger kilometres at only 8 grams.

To provide the whole high voltage system, HS2 Ltd is in the process of selecting the right organisations.

Phase One and Two A will have 280km of track between London and Crewe, via Birmingham. The contract is to design, construct and maintain the high voltage power supply is estimated at £523m.

The power sourced from the National Grid will pass through 50 traction sub-stations, and will supply power to trains, stations, depots and other accompanying infrastructure.

Key to this project is liaising with other companies involved in HS2 to ensure the system is fit for service. The contract is likely to be awarded to the successful firm in 2022.

The four organisations invited to tender are:

  • Colas / Eiffage Joint Venture
  • Siemens Mobility / Siemens Energy / Costain Ltd Joint Venture
  • SSE Enterprise Contracting / Linxon / Arcadis Joint Venture
  • UK Power Networks Services (Contracting) Ltd

HS2 Ltd's Procurement and Commercial Director, David Poole, said: “The shortlist for high voltage power supply systems is another major milestone as we put in place the key rail systems teams that will take over once the civil engineering stage is finished.

“Once complete, HS2 will be one of the lowest carbon ways to travel, freeing up more capacity on the existing rail network and helping to take cars and lorries off the roads. Our power supply systems are a crucial part of the project and part of a solution which will help the UK reach net zero by 2050.”

  • I think that Siemens Mobility / Siemens Energy / Costain Ltd Joint Venture should win the bid. And with Siemens that could manufacture the Velaro high speed trains for HS2.
