A partnership between train operator Thameslink and the Camberwell Society has seen works of art go on display at Denmark Hill railway station in London, including a marble run.
The mazy mechanical marble run is now on display on a plinth alongside the station, and has been created by artist-inventor Nick Mair, Chair of the Camberwell Society.
Nick said: “It has been wonderful how many people have stopped to chat – socially distanced! –and then carried on their journeys with smiles on their faces. It's especially wonderful to see the fascination children have shown as they watch the marbles roll along the track and get lifted back up.”
The ‘partnership plinth' outside the station has a power supply and lighting for mechanical artworks and will be used in future for other works of art and sculptures to create a changing local attraction.
A £7.5m upgrade at the station started in October last year. The project is due to be completed in the summer and will see a second entrance to the station along with new canopies, seats and information screens.
Tom Moran, Managing Director for Thameslink and Great Northern, said: “We're working across our network to make stations more attractive, comfortable and sustainable. We've commissioned artists, community groups and schools to liven up thirty stations with unique artwork inspired by their local area. Hugely talented artists across the region are coming forward with paintings, photographs, murals and mosaics.”
