Improvement works to the track in the Harlow area have been completed on the West Anglia Main Line.
The project involved replacing the track, sleepers and ballast over two weekends.
Engineers from Network Rail used a special HORTS Train (High Output Track Relaying System) which works like a conveyor belt with the front of the train running on the old rails and the rear of the train running on new rails which the system has installed.
The West Anglia Mainline works will benefit passengers travelling between London Liverpool Street, Stansted and Cambridge.
Over 300 tonnes of ballast and 5000 tonnes of sleepers were replaced in the project.
Ellie Burrows, Network Rail's route director for Anglia, said: “The tracks wear out faster on the busy main lines and that's why we carry out a regular programme of replacement across the network. Renewing the tracks helps to prevent faults that lead to speed restrictions and cancellations, meaning our passengers can get to where they need to be without delays.”
