Network Rail has completed upgrade works at three railway level crossings in Woodbridge, Suffolk.
Three level crossings in Woodbridge, Suffolk have been upgraded with new equipment that makes them safer.
Announced last year, the work has improved the safety at the level crossings to make it safer for cars or pedestrians on the crossings.
The three crossings on the East Suffolk line are at these locations in Woodbridge:-
- Haywards (on Tide Mill Way)
- Ferry Lane
- Jetty Avenue (on Jetty Lane)
At Haywards and Ferry Lane crossings, full barriers have been installed and cover both sides of the road. This will help prevent vehicles from weaving around them. In addition, an obstruction detection system has been installed to detect vehicles or pedestrians which could be on the crossing.
On Jetty Avenue, the crossing has an audible warning along with red and green lights. The green lights show when it is safe to use the crossing.
The signalling equipment at all three crossings has been updated and this means that the signallers have more information about where the train is and so the crossing alarms can be reduced to 20 seconds. Previously the alarms sounded for around 70 seconds.
Ellie Burrows, Network Rail's route director for Anglia, said: “We've seen an increase in the number of pedestrians and traffic using these crossings and this work is vital to improve safety for everyone using them. We've also carried out work that will keep rail services running safely and smoothly on this line busy line.”
