has announced that RENFE has awarded them with the contract to construction 59 new trains.

RENFE (Red Nacional de Los Ferrocarriles Españoles, translating into English as National Network of Spanish Railways) is a Spanish state-owned rail operator, which operates both Passenger and Freight trains 7,500 miles of track.

The partnership between RENFE and Stadler to build and maintain the new fleet is a first, one which will play a key part in providing vital commuter transport across major cities in Spain.

The details of the contract are summarised below:

59 brand new trains

  • Including spare parts at 15 years of maintenance by Stadler – costing around 1 billion euros

Stadler to complete Development and Production work

  • So far, Stadler is looking to use double-decked coaches on Spain's Iberian gauge to increase capacity
  • Utilising the overhead 3 kV DC electric supply
  • Designing trains to reach speeds up to 140 km/h to maintain a good timetable

The contract could be extended to include a further 44 trains with accompanying spare parts and maintenance if the circumstances arose for RENFE.

Iñigo Parra, CEO Stadler Valencia, said: “We're excited about the decision from RENFE and their trust in Stadler. We were chosen to provide trains in our factory in Spain for the Spanish commuter service – this makes us proud.”

  • I would like to see Stadler building new trains if they were to build a UK based train manufacturing plant so that they can continue with manufacturing new Flirt and Metro rolling stocks. And they could even manufacture new London Underground tube stocks for the Bakerloo Line, Waterloo & City Line and Central Line.
