CCTV onboard a train in Lancashire has caught the near-miss involving a train and two women and a dog.
The footage was released by Network Rail last week alongside a warning by Northern and Network Rail.
This footage shows one of the women bending down to pick up her dog at Challan Hall level crossing in Silverdale.
The other woman then waves at the train driver as the Northern service performed an emergency stop.
Simon Shipperd, level crossing safety manager for Network Rail, said: “The difference of just a few seconds could have led to tragedy for these two people and I can't downplay the danger they were in – both are very lucky to have not been seriously injured or killed.
“No matter how well you think you know a crossing, all users must stop, look and listen every single time they cross the railway, and dogs should kept on a lead at all times.”
Chris Jackson, regional director at Northern, said: “It's hard to believe the risks people are willing to take at railway crossings.
“Not only are they putting themselves in harms way, their actions can have a significant impact on drivers and other rail staff who have to deal with the aftermath of tragic incidents.”

Almost would of been Darwin award. So many stupid people not thinking, looking and listening before crossing over the railway tracks.
The choice is yours Network Rail, install minature red/green lights or build a bridge. My concern is that with so much of this being put out into the public domain it’s being used as a means of trying to attract public sympathy and a resultant push for blanket closure of all public footpath level crossings. Do we see a call for all highways to be closed due to similar and I’m sure more frequent incidents such as this?
Network Rail be like:
”Look at these bloody idiots doing idiot things in these footpath level crossings! With your help, we can close them down so that you don’t risk being hit ever again! Of course, it’s totally for safety reasons!”
