Network Rail is working in the Harlington, Bedfordshire, to stabilise railway tracks.
Severe weather has caused some ground movement in the trackbed, resulting in a safety risk to trains travelling along the line. Network Rail picked up on the issue quickly, thanks to onsite monitoring equipment, and sent a team to examine the damage.
From there, they decided driving steel piles into the ground along the embankment would be the best course. The work is due to be completed during March 2021.
Unfortunately, train services will be affected, with a reduction in the number of trains per hour, down to two instead of four at Harlington and Flitwick stations. There will also be a speed restriction imposed through Harlington and surrounding areas, meaning longer journey times.
Route Director for Network Rail's East Midlands route Gary Walsh said: “We're really sorry this work near Harlington is taking place at such short notice. It's crucial that we stabilise the track so services can continue running safely and reliably for passengers who need to make essential journeys.
“The wintry weather brings many challenges to the railway – which is why our teams work around the clock to monitor sites and carry out any essential work. As the weather has changed over the last few days, we need to take action now to prevent further damage.
“We want to thank passengers for continuing to follow the latest Government guidance and strongly advise those who must travel to check their journeys and allow plenty of time.”
