has confirmed its final train to have refurbishment work, Class 158 No. 158861, has entered Arriva Train Care at Crewe.

This rounds off the programme and means that all Northern trains have been refurbished and upgraded.

The project to refurbish all 260 electric and diesel trains has cost £100 million and has taken place at eight depots across the country.

Currently, refurbishment of the trains focused on passenger comfort including upgrades to seating, lighting, interior and exterior painting and toilets with baby changing facilities.

Tricia Williams, Chief Operating Officer at Northern, said: “It's fantastic to have reached such a key milestone in our bid to transform the service for our customers.”

“When this last train comes out of the depot it will mean all our customers, wherever and whenever they travel on our network, will make their journeys on new or refurbished trains.”

“We are absolutely committed to making a positive impact for the north of England and there is no better way to do that than to give our customers better journeys on improved trains.”

Northern has now started on phase two of the refurbishment programme, which will see free WiFi, CCTV, customer information screens and a number of on-board systems introduced to improve passenger experience and train performance.

Tricia added: “Our customers are at the heart of everything we do and with all the improvements we are making to trains, stations and ticketing option we are delivering on our promise to give everyone a better way to go with Northern.”
