Britannia Bridge refurbishment work to begin this week

Tomorrow, 17th February 2021, will see work start refurbishing the three land towers on .

The Grade II listed bridge was designed by Robert Stephenson in 1850 and links Anglesey with the rest of Wales.

's work will see support beams installed beneath the stone lintels at the top of the towers named Anglesey, Britannia and Caernarfon.

AmcoGiffen is carrying out the work on behalf of Network Rail and will see scaffolding erected during the six weeknights:

  • Wednesday 17th and Thursday 18th February – Scaffolding for Anglesey land tower installed
  • Monday 22nd and Tuesday 23rd February – Scaffolding for Britannia land tower installed
  • Wednesday 24th and Thursday 25th February – Scaffolding for Caernarfon land tower installed

To allow the work the be completed safely, one lane of the A55 will be closed between 19:00 and 05:00. Additionally, a temporary speed restriction of 40mph will be in place.

However, trains will not be impacted by this work.

Last year the bridge was lit up blue as part of the thank you to key workers during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Ken Skates MS, Minister for Economy, Transport and North Wales said: “This work is of vital importance and I am grateful to Network Rail and AmcoGiffen for their sensitive approach to minimising the disruption to road and rail traffic across the Britannia Bridge.

“It will ensure the well-known structure can continue carrying out its duty of connecting Ynys Mon and the Welsh mainland.”

Huw Percy, Anglesey Council's Head of Service: Highways, Waste and Property, said: “We welcome the work to strengthen and safeguard the bridge which provides a vital link between Ynys Môn and the mainland, as well as a historic engineering and cultural asset.

“We are reassured that the works are being undertaken overnight and during lock-down which will minimise disruption.”
