Amersham is the 81st step-free London Underground station

Last week, station on the was the latest station to have step-free access.

The work at Amersham included installing 2 new lifts and a bridge to link the platforms. Improved signage was also installed.

Now that Amersham has become step-free, the total number of step-free stations on the London Underground to 81, and more than 200 on the TfL network.

The lift shafts were craned into position and the lifts were built onsite.

Step-free access will allow those with mobility needs, luggage or buggies to have much-improved access.

Although over 30% of the network is now step-free work is continuing at a further six stations, , , , , Sudbury Hill and .

Heidi Alexander, Deputy Mayor for Transport, said: ‘The completion of step-free access works at Amersham Underground station is a great achievement which will make a huge difference to those with mobility needs and the wider public.'

‘It marks another milestone in our work to make London's transport network accessible for all, with yet more stations set to become step-free in the near future.'

Tim Morrison, Director of Renewals and Enhancements at London Underground, said: ‘Making travel easier for Londoners with needs is a top priority for us and, after a challenging year, the successful completion of Amersham Underground station's step-free scheme is really encouraging progress.'

‘Our step-free programme continues to improve accessibility for all customers and we are working hard to modernise more stations, improving journeys for thousands of people.'

Back in 2018, London Victoria became the 75th step-free station on the London Underground.

  • I can guarantee that Geoff Marshall will be happy to hear that as he’s done videos of stations to become or will be step-free and stations that are already step-free.

    Could TfL start planning ahead to build a new Metropolitan Line extension known as “Croxley Rail Link” to Watford Junction. With 2 new stations being added (Cassiobridge and Vicarage Road) which will be step-free. And to add lifts at Watford High Street.
