Heritage Centre, along with the 87035 Facebook Page, has announced that BR Class 87 No. 87035 ‘Robert Burns' has temporarily moved from to Crewe Basford Hall (Freightliner).

A deal has been agreed between the Crewe Heritage Centre and Locomotive Services Ltd which will see 87035 donate two of its traction motors to LSL's 86101 and 87002 to allow them to run on the mainline.

The Crewe Heritage Trust Ltd said they “have not taken this decision lightly, and it is the last resort to keep these working examples running for the foreseeable future.”

87035 will have to be lifted off its bogies to allow traction motors 2 and 3 to be removed, and will then see two non-working Class 87 motors refitted to keep the weight balanced.

You can see future restoration updates on 87035 by visiting their Facebook Page.

The move was also captured by RailCam on their Crewe cams, which can be seen below:

  • I recall class 87s howling through Willesden Junction at speed with a rake of twelve or more coaches behind them and blue sparks flashing from the pantograph, when I visited the depots both there and at Old Oak Common as a boy in the late 1970s. Hugely impressive locomotives.
