The railway between Stonehaven and Montrose will remain closed whilst repairs take place after a railway bridge was damaged, Network Rail has said.

The bridge is located three miles north of Carmont and has been closed since the 15th January 2021 after stonework fell from the side of the bridge.

Assessments of the bridge have been completed, and engineers plan to repair the bridge and reopen it for freight and passenger trains from the 22nd February 2021.

The damaged parapet will be repaired as well as strengthening work on the bridge deck on the southbound railway line.

Engineers will strengthen the bridge by installing concrete supports to help support the track and ballast before the parapet wall is repaired.

Network Rail’s capital delivery director for Scotland’s Railway, Kris Kinnear, said: “We’re working hard to quickly deliver these repairs and reopen the line, but these are significant engineering works and will take time to complete.

”The rural location of the bridge and the fact our engineers will be working at considerable height in an exposed location also mean this project is a challenging one for our team.

“We are working around-the-clock to safely reopen the railway as soon as we possibly can for our customers.”

As part of checks to bridges after the Carmont rail crash in early 2020, the bridge was inspected in October 2020, and no deterioration was found. An investigation is ongoing into why the parapet failed.
