Wincheap Road bridge, which runs over the A28 in Canterbury, is being renovated.
Transporting trains on the Dover to Faversham mainline over the A28 Ashford to Canterbury road, the bridge is a key transport link for the area.
Being built in 1906, 115 years of use has taken its toll. To keep the bridge in a serviceable state, first stages of the renovation saw the steelwork cleaned of rust and graffiti, which has now been completed.
Next phase, starting Friday 5th of February throughout the month, will see welding used to reinforce any weaken steel, followed by applying protective paint.
Some road traffic may see disruptions, with diversions in place.
Network Rail Route Director for Kent Fiona Taylor said: “This vital asset is in need of remedial repairs so that trains can continue to run safely into the future. One of the benefits of this work is that it gives us a chance to clean-up graffiti, benefitting both the local community as well as train passengers. We apologise for any inconvenience while we carry out these important works. By keeping work to weekends, we hope to avoid causing too much disruption to the city of Canterbury.“
