has announced that the Citadis X05 trams have entered into service in Kaohsiung City in Taiwan, on the South Circular Light Rail line.

The first phase of the line has 14 stations and has been open since 2015, with the second phase with 23 stations has now entered partial service. The circular line forms a 22.1km loop around the city.

The fifteen have been designed delivered and commissioned by Alstom and are Alstom's first trams in Taiwan.

“Being the first Asian city to adopt the Citadis X05, we are excited to be contributing towards the green modernisation of Kaohsiung's public transport network, while protecting the aesthetic appeal of the city. With their efficiency, availability and easier maintenance, the Citadis trams provide a step change in the city's transport capability, reliability and comfort,” said Olivier Loison, Managing Director for Alstom in China & East Asia.

The trams, manufactured at Alstom sites in France, have low floors and double doors, large windows and LED lighting, along with spacious seats and passenger information screens.

They run autonomously and use the Citadis Ecopack system for energy storage and catenary-free recharging at each station.

Citadis trams are in operation around the world, with recent additions such as Cologne and Athens.

  • Perhaps Alstom could manufacture the Alstom Citadis trams or tram-train for Manchester Metrolink if the Stockport extension does get the go ahead.
