Mid Norfolk Railway: RAIB to issue Safety Digest after Pacer train crashes through Dereham level crossing

The RAIB has finished their preliminary investigation into an incident involving a Pacer train at on the .

The incident at Norwich Road level crossing will result in a safety digest in the next few weeks, the RAIB has said.

The incident happened around 15:52 on the 10th December 2020, when the centre carriage of a Class 144 Pacer train detached from the winch rope when unloading from the low loader.

The train ran away and collided with the gates on a level crossing, broke through and came to rest on the public road.

The Mid Norfolk Railway said “The issuing of the safety digest will bring the RAIB involvement with the incident to a close.  This investigation together with The Mid Norfolk Railway's own ongoing investigation and review of its own procedures will mean that the railway will carry out any changes required as soon as possible.”

“The railway would like to again thank the Norfolk Constabulary for their assistance at the time.”

No one was injured because of the incident, and the only damage occurred to MNR property.
