The Industrial Heritage Association of has been informed by the European Federation of Industrial and Technical Heritage Association (EFAITH) that the European Commission and the EU Parliament will declare that 2021 will be European Year of the Rail.

Railways, tramways, infrastructure and rolling stock are important to the heritage. However, in some countries, this heritage is rusting and is being left abandoned.

Depreciated rolling stock in some countries is being stored in “railway graveyards”.

Luckily, in Ireland, there are a number of heritage railways, but these are being threatened by the loss of income due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In preparation for 2021, EFAITH has launched a campaign to draw attention to the railway heritage that is in danger of being lost, and this campaign is being supported by Fedecrail.
