has released a short video clip showing some of the maintenance work being carried out overnight on the Tyne & Wear Metro.

While most of us are fast asleep, the maintenance team worked through the night carrying out a variety of jobs on the 77km network.

In the video, you can see some of the maintenance of the city centre tunnels when drainage works are carried out to prevent water damaging track and signalling equipment.

Martin Kearney, who is the Nexus Chief Operating Office, joined a night ship to meet some of the staff working on the maintenance of the Tyne & Wear Metro network.

He took a look at escalator maintenance, tunnel drainage works and also a walk of the QEII bridge.

Head of Maintenance Delivery, Steve Shiel, said: “We are carrying out drainage works in the city centre tunnels underneath Newcastle. This is vital manual work to clear the trackside gutters.”

“Some of the issues that can occur through poor drainage are track circuit failures when water pools under the track base. It is work that ultimately helps to prevent service disruption.”

“Our civils and structures team undertake an annual programme throughout the tunnel areas in the city centre in order to keep on top of this issue and improve asset reliability.”
