Work on the new station entrance building at Ilford railway station is taking shape, with the steel framework for the building being completed.
The new building on Cranbrook Road is being built by Network Rail's contractor, VolkerFitzpatrick, who were awarded the contract back in 2019.
Three hundred sections of steel have been installed using a tower crane. Work will now focus on installing the station roof and the external cladding.
Once these have been completed, work can move to fit out the internals of the station building.
Work started on the station earlier this year, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, the construction of new railway station entrance building at Ilford has been delayed, and is now expected to be completed by May 2021.
Ellie Burrows, Network Rail's route director for Anglia said: “I am really pleased that we have successfully completed the installation of the steel frame for the new station entrance which will allow us now to focus on the roof and external shell of what will be a modern, spacious station building.”
‘Delivering this new station will not only be great for passengers using the future Elizabeth line services, it will also help to be a catalyst for Redbridge Council's vision for Ilford.'
Howard Smith, TfL's Chief Operating Officer for the Elizabeth line, said: “It's great to see Ilford station's new entrance start to take shape. Once complete it will provide customers with a more spacious and airy ticket hall with new lifts helping deliver step-free access at the station for the first time.”

The closed off part of the former platform 5 at Ilford could be used as a waiting room and shop kiosks. As Ilford had 5 platforms before TfL Rail took over and Network Rail upgraded the GEML with new overhead structures and overhead wires. That are designed to cope with hot weather conditions and doesn’t sag.

Although the 1980s design looked cooler.
The old station building to be replaced by a new station building. I remember when Network Southeast were very popular around London and the Southeast with stations that had Network Southeast including the logo which some stations still have remains of Network Southeast.
