Passengers are being urged not to travel later this month, to or from as upgrade works take place.

The £1.2bn upgrade will continue on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd November, as well as a six-day period at Christmas.

Progress has been made in and around London King's Cross, which includes work towards reopening a disused railway tunnel and improvements to the track and signalling.

On 21st and 22nd November, engineers will install overhead line equipment and improve the signalling system further, which can only be done when no trains are running.

Trains will be affected as follows:

  • LNER services will terminate at , rail replacement bus services will operate between Peterborough and Bedford, where trains will run to London St Pancras.
  • No trains will operate between / and London King's Cross.
  • will operate into London St Pancras, rather than London King's Cross

Ed Akers, Principal Programme Sponsor for , said: “This work which is taking place over weekends in November is a vital part of the East Coast Upgrade. The project will bring a more modern, reliable railway for passengers.

“We are making as much progress as possible without disrupting services, but work on the overhead line equipment and improvements to the signalling system can only be carried out safely when there are no trains in the area.

“We thank passengers for their continued patience and strongly advise those who need to travel to or from London to check their journey and allow plenty of time.”

A spokesperson on behalf of train operators on the route, said: “We would like to thank passengers for their patience whilst these improvements are carried out as part of the East Coast Upgrade.

“We strongly advise people to check their journey before travelling via National Rail Enquiries, at EastCoastUpgrade.co.uk or with their train operator. Replacement buses will be running and some journeys will take longer.”

More work is planned, including a six-day closure between Christmas and the New Year. No trains will run to London King's Cross from Friday 25th December until Wednesday 30th December.

  • Ely north junction could do with a a new flyover going over the River Great Ouse and the Fen Line from Breckland Line onto the Ely-Peterborough Line (Herewere Line). So that East Midlands Railway trains can avoid Ely. And maybe add a terminus platform at Ely for Great Northern and Thameslink trains to terminate at Ely coming from London Kings Cross, Cambridge, Horsham, Brighton, Gatwick Airport and Littlehampton. And Greater Anglia trains from Ipswich via Bury St. Edmunds.
