Later this month work will begin to upgrade a railway bridge on Doncaster Road in Crofton near Wakefield.
The work will be carried out by Network Rail and will see £3.7m spent on replacing the bridge which was built in 1880.
The bridge carries the railway line from Knottingley to Leeds and has been struck by high sided vehicles a number of times which has caused structural damage.
Demolition of the existing bridge will be followed by the installation of the new bridge which will include collision protection beams to help prevent damage in the future.
The main part of the project will be carried out over the Christmas period to prevent any impact on train services.
The bridge upgraded should by completed some time in February 2021.
Doncaster Road in Crofton will have some restrictions while work is carried out, with overnight closures at weekends during November and December. The road will be completely closed between 22nd December and the 30th of December.
For this work to be carried out safely, Doncaster Road will have some traffic restrictions:

“We've carefully planned the work to make sure that Doncaster Road remains open whenever possible, especially at busier times. Key parts of this project can only be carried out safely when the road is closed, and we apologise to drivers, residents and businesses in Crofton for any inconvenience.”

The railway bridge does need replacing at some point. Another major task for Network Rail.
Mostly its because heavy goods vehicles that caused the damage to the bridge. And even double decker buses.
