Pedestrians and cyclists in South Wales are being urged to safely use level crossings after a number of people were caught on camera risking their lives.
Network Rail has released new camera footage showing people wandering onto tracks where trains run at speeds of up to 85 mph.
This year has seen the British Transport Police record 67 incidents of level crossing misuse. Dangerous behaviour has been seen near Llanharan, Rhoose, Maesteg, Cilfrew, Llanelli, Llanion and Dinas Powys.
Network Rail and BTP are appealing to people not to loiter or trespass at the level crossing, with parents being asked to supervise children and to make sure that the signs for Stop, Look and Listen are observed, everyone should be following the following advice.
- Concentrate – it's easy to get distracted, especially by phones, music and conversation.
- Stop, look and listen. Follow signs and instructions.
- Check both ways before crossing – if there is a train coming, don't cross.
- Understand the warnings (lights, barriers, alarms).
- Cross quickly, keeping children close and dogs on a lead.
Ronnie Gallagher, Route Level Crossing Manager at Network Rail, commented:
“We have noticed a significant increase in use at public footpaths since the introduction of Covid-19 restrictions. People have been walking longer distances, and many will be using level crossings for the first time. It is important that you concentrate, follow the instructions and only cross when there are no trains approaching.”
British Transport Police Embedded Inspector, Beata Evans, said:
“Each year, hundreds of people take risks on and around the railway, resulting in tragic consequences and life-changing injuries.
We are continuing to proactively patrol the railway network across Wales. Safety is our number one priority, and we're reminding everyone of the importance of taking care around the railway and that everyone loses when you step on the track.”

I hate hearing about people trespassing onto the railways and being stupid without realising that trains do pass very fast. So many idiots everywhere.
But why do some people still do it. Its enough to cause delays and disruptions. Even though fines is ideal but there needs to be a ban on people trespassing without any due care.
Judging by the use of a light reflector these are professional models and photographers engaging in the girl on the tracks photo collections, I have every sympathy for the train crews and emergency services that have to clear up the mess but assuming the participants are Welsh I’m unfortunately not surprised that they are flagrantly disobeying all of rules that are set in place to protect everyone.
