The has said that it is pulling out all the stops to make sure that visitors can make memories to remember this year.

Whilst a number of other venues and attractions have had to cancel their Christmas events, the Severn Valley Railway is allowing visitors to enjoy a superb adventure with all the necessary COVID measures in place.

It will be a busy time for the SVR, with Santa Trains and Steam in Lights services running in Late November.

Helen Smith, the SVR's general manager, said: “We're delighted that we're able to offer our Christmas visitors a safe and enjoyable experience using the SVR's extensive fleet of compartment carriages.  This has more than proved its worth on the services we've been running since we reopened for business in August. People love the fact that they're travelling in their own private compartment, where they don't need to wear face coverings, so they can simply sit back and enjoy the magic.

“It's wonderful to be able to offer so much to visitors this year, especially after all the uncertainty and strangeness that's resulted from the pandemic.  So many venues sadly haven't been able to run Christmas events this year, so at the Severn Valley Railway we're absolutely determined to make sure our visitors don't miss out.”

Steam in Lights train services are back by popular demand for 2020. Starting from Bridgnorth, the steam train will show off lights, snow flurries and more from a private compartment. Departures from Bridgnorth range from 27th November to the 23rd December – prices are between £120 and £130 for a compartment for up to six people, whilst a four people compartment will cost between £80 and £90.

Meanwhile, Santa Specials will take families on a steam train trip to Arley when they will see a Christmas show. Passengers will join the train at with a festive drink and snack in their private compartment. Departures from Kidderminster will run on selected dates between 28th November and 24th December 2020.  A compartment for up to six passengers costs between £170 and £195, and a compartment for four is between £110 and £135.

  • Is this really appropriate at a time when the rest of the heritage and hospitality sectors have been forced to close down? Clearly these are not regular passenger trains, and playing the system to run seems rather unfair on the rest of the sector.

    • Hi Daniel,

This news piece was written before the latest lockdown information was announced at the weekend, and the SVR have already announced revisions to their plans.

      • Thanks Alan. It seemed odd, as the SVR have always appeared to me to be a very responsible operation.

  • Very disappointed that the trains are not stopping at highley this year as we purchased a yearly pass and then have to travel to either bridgenorth or kidderminster to board which was not explained when purchasing the pass the reason we have a pass was to be able to travel from highley without using the car
