The Old Kiln Light Railway has announced that Ruston 48 DLG RH 497760 has arrived at their site in Tilford, Surrey.
The locomotive will boost the fleet of internal combustion locomotives.
RH497760 was built in 1963 and started life working at the Silver Dale Colliery in Newcastle Upon Lyme. After a number moves to different collieries around Manchester and Staffordshire, a private buyer bought the locomotive in 1992 and has now made the long journey from Worcestershire to Surrey.
Weighing around 7 tonnes, this locomotive is the heaviest that the railway has operated, but it is also the most powerful diesel locomotive in the fleet at the Old Kiln Railway.
This means that RH497760 can operate longer trains and tackle the 1:45 gradient from Reeds Road to Mills Wood stations. This will mean that they can carry more passenger bubbles through the current restrictions. Passengers can enjoy a ride behind the locomotive and see behind the scenes of the Rural Life Living Museum and look out across the Farnham Heath RSPB land.

Please note that the name of the colliery is Silverdale Colliery after the North Staffordshire village it was in before Silverdale became part of Newcastle and was situated on the The North Staffoerdshire Railway line from Stoke to Market Drayton. Nice to see that the loco will be put to some good use.
