The has announced that GWR Saint No. 2999 Lady of Legend has won a highly commended accolade at the Museums + Heritage Awards 2020.

The locomotive is a recreation of the type of GWR steam locomotive last seen in 1953 when the last of the examples was scrapped.

The £825,000 project was completed by volunteers and took nearly 24 years to complete.

2999 was also recognised by the Heritage Railway Association in February when the project won the Chairmans Special Prize at the annual awards.

Chief Executive, Emma Jhita, said, “This is wonderful news, a real tribute to the hard work and enthusiasm of the team here at Didcot. It is particularly rewarding to be recognised nationally, especially as we're not a conventional museum or gallery.”

Anna Preedy, Director of the annual Museums + Heritage Awards, commented: “Being able to share such great news, in announcing the winners of the 2020 Museums + Heritage Awards, has been a real privilege. As we work together to recover, these Awards are a timely reminder of the exceptional creativity and determination of this sector, characteristics which are demonstrated so well by all of our winners.”

This Well-Preserved ex-Great Western Steam Locomotive, is indeed A Major Masterpiece for such A Fascinating Mixed-Traffic Engine within UK Preservation.

I’d also like to Congratulate the Didcot Railway Centre on winning that Major Accoloade… Especially on how well they did in-between.
