Network Rail and Transport for London are reminding the public about level crossing usage on London Overground between Romford and Upminster as new trains are introduced from today.
Whilst crossings are still safe to be used; the new trains have different features which may impact the way people use level crossings:
- The front of the new trains is now orange, differing to the yellow of the old trains.
- The new trains are now fitted with LED lights.
- Class 710s are quieter and sound different from the outgoing Class 315 trains.
The Class 710 have already been seen operating with London Overground. These new trains are built by Bombardier in Derby and are a vast improvement over the outgoing Class 315 trains.
Ellie Burrows, Network Rail's route director for Anglia, said: “The new trains will provide improved comfort and maintain reliability for passengers on this line. For our level crossing users, the new train will look and sound different, so it's important not to take any risks and to follow the signs, warnings and guidance at the crossing, as always.”
Rory O'Neill, Transport for London's General Manager for London Overground, said: “This new London Overground train looks different and is much quieter than the existing one, so we recommend care is taken to ensure the safe continued use of the pedestrian crossings on this route. For our customers, these new trains will help ensure a reliable service is maintained and will feature walk-through carriages, air-conditioning, live network information and improved accessibility.”

Nice to see the Class 710 now operating on the Romford-Upminster branch line. But yes people still need to look and listen for trains when crossing the tracks without having headphones on or not paying attention.
I will take a ride on the Class 710 on the Romford-Upminster branch line. Very sad to see the Class 315 has now ended its last ever journey since they were built in 1980 and came into service in the 1980s. Hopefully the Class 710 shouldn’t break down a lot.
