Train operating company London North Eastern Railway (LNER) has announced that Durham Railway Station has received a ‘Highly Commended' award in the Large Station of the Year category.
The National Rail Awards 2020 were hosted by broadcaster Huw Edwards.
The railway station building was built back in 1857 and the judges praised the facilities in the building including the travel centre and northbound waiting room.
Durham Railway Station is managed by LNER and their fleet of Azuma trains travel along the East Coast route between London and Scotland.
The subway at Durham Station was recently refurbished to include energy-efficient LED lighting, a new walkway as well as new wall panels with vibrant images.
LNER Managing Director, David Horne, said: “I am thrilled to see Durham station recognised in this year's National Rail Awards. We are proud of the commitment shown by our station team at Durham, providing world-class service to customers using visiting the station.”

Amazing station. Never been to Durham but congratulations.
Well done Durham. Such a lovely railway station in Durham, Northeast England. Perhaps it could do with a redevelopment with a extra platform so that LNER trains heading towards Edinburgh Waverley and Scotland. So that they can stop at Durham and to retain the current northbound line for trains including freight trains passing through. That doesn’t stop and passes through Durham enabling and freeing up the bottleneck on the ECML.
