Cockfosters London Underground station is now step-free

Work at Tube Station on the has been completed, meaning that passengers now have step-free access at the station.

Now that the lift has been installed, it makes Cockfosters the 80th underground station to have step-free access.

The lift shaft was put into position in an overnight operation using a crane.

Around the lift, new tiling and brick-work have been used which matches the Grade II station building design.

Since 2016, 12 stations on the London Underground have become step-free. As part of the London Underground Programme stations at  , , , , , Sudbury Hill and will also become step-free.

Work at all of these seven underground stations is underway with most of them now having their lift towers installed.

Heidi Alexander, Deputy Mayor for Transport, said: ‘Making London's public transport network more accessible is one of our key priorities, and it's great to see Cockfosters Tube station become step-free.

‘These changes will make a huge difference to those with accessibility needs who use this station, and we continue to work on making more stations step-free, significantly improving people's journeys.'

Tim Morrison, Director of Renewals and Enhancements at London Underground, said: ‘I'm delighted that construction to make Cockfosters Tube station step-free is now complete.

‘The new lift will make a positive difference to our customers, making it much easier for those with mobility needs, heavy luggage or with children in buggies to access the Tube at this station.'

The Leader of Enfield Council, Cllr Nesil Caliskan, said: ‘This is great news for Enfield residents and will encourage more widespread use of the Tube network.

‘Initiatives like this mean people are more likely to use public transport and leave the car at home, supporting our wider efforts to tackle climate change and make our borough carbon neutral by 2040.'

  • Nice to see Cockfosters having lifts and being the 80th tube station to have step free accessibility.

  • I know that Hainault does as it’s near to my Nan’s. and it’s on the Central Line. But good to see Cockfosters having new lifts.
