A new piece of bespoke artwork has been installed at Railway station by Avanti West Coast.

The piece was commissioned by Macclesfield Town Council and created by artist and sculptor Tim Davies.

The metal mural features landmarks of the town, including the original Hovis Mill and the designer furniture store Arighi Bianchi.

The mural was designed from images produced by pupils from 4 schools in Macclesfield, Bollinbrook Primary School, Park Royal Community School, Ash Grove Academy, Macclesfield Academy and Macclesfield College.

The artwork was made using a laser-cut technique which Tim has been developing while creating art with Children.

Speaking of his first art project at a railway station, Tim Davies, said: “I have a strong record in delivering high-quality public artwork commissions in schools, festivals, theatre and commerce – together with over twenty years of experience working within education and community group settings. Community engagement and inspiring young people is at the heart of my practice as an artist and I relished the opportunity to work with a new community. It is empowering to see the children's artwork displayed in such a bold and permanent way.”

Councillor Janet Jackson MBE, said: “I'm really pleased to see this mural finally installed at the train station. It provides a welcome to Macclesfield depicting a number of our iconic heritage buildings and setting the scene with regards to the character of the town.”

Laura Harper, Avanti West Coast Station Manager at Macclesfield, said: “We're delighted to have this beautiful artwork on permanent display at Macclesfield station – it provides a cheerful welcome to the many people arriving by train each and every day. Tim and the local children have perfectly captured the spirit of this great town and its community, which we're proud to serve, and we're sure this mural will be enjoyed for many years to come.”

  • As Avanti West Coast serves Macclesfield. I thought it was managed by Northern with Avanti West Coast trains stopping there as well Northern trains.

  • One has to wonder at the halfwits in Macclesfield….be they rail company, town council or sponsors…..in the ‘creation of a mural’ at Macclesfield Station….

Whatever the merits or otherwise of such ‘artworks’ …or …’murals’…….and there are many……the creation of this on a wall is really quite stupid.

It has all the hallmarks of being Grafitti rather than art..

This is not to decry it as such, but to question, if not hold up to ridicule, it’s location.

At a time when we see so much Grafitti on so many walls and buildings…….and it has to be said on railway structures where nothing is ever done to remove it……….it beggars belief that this ‘artwork’ at Macclesfield Station should be put on a wall.

Talk about openly encouraging the Grafitti scum to despoil our environment……

Has nobody in Macclesfield thought this through….?

You couldn’t make this up if you tried….

  • Artwork? Seems a strange description for some old iron just crying out for the attention of the graffiti artists.

  • Sad about the football club who are no longer around but at least the railway station will always be icon to the town centre.
