The Midland Railway Trust has announced that it has been awarded £149,156 as part of the Culture Recovery Fund, which was announced on the 17th October 2020.
The trust is just one of the organisations announcing grants, which includes the Severn Valley Railway, Glos Warks Railway and the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway.
The Midland Railway Trust operates the Midland Railway – Butterley but has been closed since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, with no plans to reopen until Spring 2021.
The grant will allow the trust to complete a re-organisation programme towards its long term sustainability, which will be delivered by its volunteers, who are preparing for the reopening in the spring.
Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said: “This is more vital funding to protect cultural gems across the country, save jobs and prepare the arts to bounce back. Through Arts Council England we are delivering the biggest ever investment in the arts in record time. Hundreds of millions of pounds are already making their way to thousands of organisations.
“These awards build on our commitment to be here for culture in every part of the country.”
Chair, Arts Council England, Sir Nicholas Serota, said: “Culture is an essential part of life across the country, helping to support people's wellbeing through creativity and self-expression, bringing communities together, and fuelling our world-class creative industries.
“This latest set of awards from the Culture Recovery Fund builds on those announced recently and will help hundreds of organisations to survive the next few months, ensuring that the cultural sector can bounce back after the crisis. We will continue doing everything we can to support artists and cultural and creative organisations, with further funding to be announced in the coming weeks.”
Midland Railway Trust Chairman, Richard Ward, said: “We are incredibly grateful for the support of Arts Council England in these challenging times. We are one of only three museums in the heritage railway sector to receive funding from the Cultural Recovery Fund. The Midland Railway – Butterley has overcome many challenges in its rich history, and we are determined that it will continue long into the future, developing and exceling as testimony to the former Midland Railway and its successors, and as a key attraction in the East Midlands' economy.”

The Midland Railway-Butterley, os still one of my favourite Transportation Destinations and fellow British Tourist Attractions, that I’ve visited, even to hopefully revisit once again, someday.
A Jolly Well Done to them by hte way, Especially to the Cultural Recovery Fund in-between.
Wow, This is Another Surprise… Now even the Marvellous Midland Railway-Butterley (MR-B) have Thankfully been Rewarded/Granted such an Astounding Amount… to help secure it’s Future, and for eventual Road & Rails to Recovery Too.
Having Visited the MR-B Twice before (in 2009 and 2014), I always knew the Midland Railway-Butterley, in Derbyshire, would be saved and to prove once again it Truly has A Future Ahead.
