Last year plans for a new railway station at Perry Barr were announced.

The final plans for the new transport interchange in the West Midlands have now been submitted to Birmingham City Council.

The new building will have step-free access alongside multiple entrances lifts and stairs. There will also be a ticket office, baby changing facilities and an accessible toilet. The station will also have cycle racks, passenger seating and planters.

Outline planning permission is also being made for a bus interchange in front of the One Stop Shopping Centre.

Mayor of the West Midlands Andy Street said: “This new station demonstrates the benefit to local people and local jobs from our region's success in securing the Commonwealth Games.

“Because we secured the Games we've been able to bring forward long awaited investment that will improve things for commuters, and visitors for years to come.

“And that will help the area benefit even more from huge investment in this part of Birmingham.”

Cllr Ian Ward, WMCA portfolio holder for transport and leader of Birmingham City Council, said: “I'm sure most people would agree this new station will be a vast improvement on what we have currently.

“The station and bus interchange are important parts of the wider Perry Barr redevelopment project which will improve transport connectivity for people in north Birmingham.

“It is also part of the wider improvements to our railway, bus, tram and cycle networks as we bid to change the way people travel across the region.”

  • Perhaps redevelop Perry Barr railway station with 2 island platforms to help with the overcrowding because of the 2022 Commonwealth games that Birmingham is hosting.

    • Perry Barr already has ramps(admittedly long) to both platforms. They were built circa 1989. Lifts are wonderful, until they break down, then you’ve got to wait for maintenance people to come.
