It has been confirmed that Caledonian Railway steam locomotive 828 has had its final in-frames boiler test in Aviemore Shed, as its next 10-year overhaul comes to an end.

The final test was completed today (4th September 2020), and now CR 828 has a new 10-year boiler ticket.

Today saw 828 complete a test run of around a mile in the confines of Aviemore Shed Yard – everything went well, and a loaded test run will be completed in the next few days to make sure the locomotive is fully ready to return to service.

Unfortunately, due to the coronavirus pandemic and financial constraints, 828 will not see much use over the next couple of months. However, the locomotive will be available as a backup for Ivatt Class 2 No. 46512.

828 bowed out of service when the coronavirus lockdown began, and the official boiler ticket ran out on the 14th April 2020.

This means that the impressive overhaul was completed in just under five months, which included three months of coronavirus lockdown – this is absolutely superb news for the team looking after 828.

The CR 828 page said “Huge congratulations to Nathan Lightowler and all the team at Aviemore Shed and also to Adam Dalgleish and Northern Steam Engineering!”
