Today (21st Sept) marks the start of 6 weeks of public consultations about upgrading the capacity of the railway network in the area.

The overall aim is to allow more trains to run through Ely.

This will help meet the demand for passenger services and allow more rail freight from the port at Felixstowe to be moved to the West Midlands and the North.

Consultation with Residents and Businesses will give them a chance to learn more about the proposals including:-

  • potential benefits and aspirations
  • the challenges that would have to be addressed to increase capacity
  • current funding position of the EACE programme
  • how the public will be consulted as options are progressed
  • How the public can have their say

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the first part of the consultation will take place remotely via the Network Rail website, with materials being available to download and an online survey for completion.

Webchats will also be arranged for the public to speak to the project representatives.

Ellie Burrows, Network Rail's route director for Anglia said: “It is important that we provide opportunities to engage with the communities that could be impacted by our work as it develops. It is even more important that we listen to people and gather their views to help inform our development and design process. By starting these discussions early, we hope to embark on this journey with the community and progress these proposals together, finding the right solution for the railway and for Ely.”

  • Maybe a new avoiding line could be built from the Breckland Line (Norwich-Ely) to the Herewere Line (Ely-Peterborough) to allow East Midlands Railway, CrossCountry and freight trains to avoid Ely and the freight only loop line.

  • The junction north of Ely is a huge bottleneck. Does any train use the single loop line from the Breckland Line onto the Herewere Line. Could Network Rail also reopen the branch line to Wisbech.
