Bagnall steam locomotive Peter, No. 2067 of 1918, was restored by Amberley Museum, finally being steamed in 1993. During Peter's restoration, it was found that one expansion link, die block and rods were present in the ‘box of parts'.
This meant that a replacement expansion link was found, changed to fit and the other missing parts fabricated.
Since then, Peter has run for 2 ten year boiler tickets at the Amberley Museum and is now currently undergoing a 10-year overhaul.
As a chance encounter, Amberley Museum received an email from Peter Heather, a former volunteer at the Brockham Museum, which merged with Amberley in 1982.
Peter told Amberley that when he moved house, which needed a clear out of his garage, he found the missing parts that he had taken home to restore in the 1960s. He then took the parts for the loco along with other exhibits.
This finding could not have been timed any better as work on the valve gear is about to start. The parts delivered to Amberley can now be assessed to see if they can be reused on Peter.
