£216m contract awarded for power supply upgrades between Doncaster and Edinburgh

The Power Supply Upgrade will enter its second phase to improve the East Coast Main Line, thanks to a new £216m contract awarded by for the Rail Electrification Alliance.

VolkerRail, J Murphy & Sons, Systra, Siemens Mobility and Network Rail make up the Rail Electrification Alliance and plans to make upgrades to the East Coast Main Line between to .

The project, which has been in the making for five years, is part of the £1.2bn East Coast Upgrade project. Once this wider project is complete, the East Coast Main Line will be more reliable and trains will be more punctual for passengers.

Power upgrades have been completed in the last few years on the southern section of the route, but similar work is now needed on the northern section.

This project has been funded by the Department for Transport in partnership with the Intercity Express Programme.

The Rail Electrification Alliance Board commented: “The Power Supply Upgrade of the East Coast Main Line is a significant piece of work. We have been working together as an Alliance for the past five years and the team delivering the project have gone from strength to strength, continuing not only physical works during COVID-19 but also delivering a contract proposal which will secure the project for the next four years and deliver the power upgrades needed for the full route from London to Edinburgh.”

Ed Akers, the Principal Programme Sponsor for Network Rail, said: “The power supply upgrade is a vital element of the East Coast Upgrade programme. It will help deliver passenger benefits, enabling more trains to run and ensuring that journeys are reliable for passengers travelling on the route.”

  • There were plans to electrify from York to Harrogate and Leeds. And the electrification between Leeds and Colton Junction near York. Which could happen in the future. Plus does that mean Transpennine Express can operate the Class 802 Nova 1s on electric mode on the ECML.

  • Could electrification to Hull via Selby could still happen. With Hull Trains using the Class 802 Paragon IETs.
