Study launched to use overhead wire equipment as wireless antennas

A study has been launched into potentially using overhead wires to mount small cells and wireless antennas on.

The feasibility study will focus on the location of the antennas and also how the equipment will be mounted on the railway equipment.

The impact on design will also be considered by the study, as well as installation and maintenance of both the overhead wire equipment and also the wireless antennas.

The study will also give the main requirements for a safe location, design, installation and maintenance of any equipment mounted to the overhead wire equipment.

Mott MacDonald was commissioned by the to explore the
feasibility of utilising OLE structures to mount small cells and wireless antennas.

  • Why not have solar panels or a solar panel substation and to connect to the 25,000v overhead wires that powers the Class 800 & Class 801 Azumas and other trains that are electric or bi-mode.

  • New electrification such as the South Wales Metro could have renewables connected to the OLE being developed by Riding Sunbeams Ltd with 5G, hopefully this will reduce costs and make future electrification more likely.
