Cyclists are being urged by along with pedestrians to use level crossings safely, after shocking CCTV footage was released showing misuse in East Yorkshire.

The CCTV footage was captured at Mingledale near Harpham, where trains between Driffield and Bridlington travel at speeds of up to 70mph.

The footage shows dangerous behaviour ranging from photo opportunities to individuals leaving bikes on the mainline.

Vicki Beadle, Operations Risk Advisor for Network Rail, said: “The behaviour we have seen at Mingledale and Harpham level crossings is deeply concerning and shows that people are completely oblivious to the dangers they are putting themselves and their friends in.

“More people are exercising outdoors during the summer, and may be taking new, unfamiliar routes, but the railway is not a photo opportunity and it is never safe to stop or hang around on the tracks.

“It is crucial that people take extra care to cross quickly and directly, once they've checked it is safe.”

  • It doesn’t help when TV shows people standing on railway lines. Chris Tarrant does this. He is obviously not a railway enthusiast as he claims to be.

  • No doubt Mr.Pillock and his daughter put their clever selfies on social media (or is it anti-social media?) to impress their friends and show what brave, adventurous free spirits they are…

  • I had ‘words’ with a couple of friends on FB a while ago with regard to the court case for a claim by the parent of the teen sadly killed in Calderdale. I noted the recklessness and stupidity of taking any risks on a level crossing, regardless of whether you have any understanding of the speed, weight, and ‘stopping distance’ of a train or light engine/loco. I pointed out, too, that people cannot, and should not, rely on even a strong knowledge of local passenger service timetables, as freight trains and stock movements, specials, and the like could be en route. I further highlighted the impact on drivers, guards, BTP, and other emergency service staff when there are injuries or fatalities. In addition, I drew attention to warning signs, et cetera, that are at crossings, and said that Network Rail and TOCs can’t be held responsible for people ignoring instructions and/or warnings. (Hell, idiots can hardly blame a food and drink retailer if the don’t dilute their squash with water, or don’t follow the cooking instructions on a meal, so NR and TOCs shouldn’t be blamed for those not using their intelligence or common sense, and yes, as noted above, trying to get themselves a Darwin Award!) It took some verbal/written ‘hammering’ but they acknowledged the foolishness of such people’s actions, and their personal responsibilities, eventually. I despair of the human race/people, sometimes. 🤦‍♀️

  • Only natural selection comes when stupid people don’t get out of way and trains travelling at high speed.

  • Why do people act so stupid taking photos whilst on the railway tracks and not knowing how dangerous it is. Including when trains pass through at 70-80mph, 90-100mph and 110-125mph. Whilst most level crossings have been replaced by footbridges.
