The have published an update on the restoration of their London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) Stanier Class Five “Black 5” No.45163.

Boiler and Smokebox

Volunteers have been working on the boiler for the first time in years.

Once the ‘J pipe' has been dismantled, the team can then fully inspect the boiler to see what work will be required. The supporting bar for the smokebox door has been riveted in place.

The crossheads have been repaired using welding, meaning they are ready for sending off to contractors for white metalling, machining and pairing with the new piston rods.

Following a new damper control shafts bracket being produced, it's now been fixed to the rear dragbox.

Bolt holes are being reamed in the slidebar, with the next stage seeing the bolts made. Work on new underkeeps is almost complete and the pattern for the coupled axlebox dust guards are ready for delivery to the foundry.
