Rail operators and are urging passengers to plan ahead and follow public health advice as temperatures rise into the weekend.

With many people taking advantage of hot weather by heading to coastal resorts, it is vital that passengers who use the railway for journeys follow advice to keep themselves safe.

Network Rail and train operators are working together to minimise disruption by having ‘extreme weather action teams' on hand to keep people moving.

Robert Nisbet, director of nations and regions at the Rail Delivery Group, which represents Network Rail and train operators, said: “With hot weather forecast, we know that many people will want to visit friends or take the family to the beach. Train operators and Network Rail are working together to help passengers travel safely this summer as part of our Safer Travel Pledge by boosting cleaning, helping with hygiene and providing improved information to help people stagger their journeys.

“When travelling in this weekend's hot weather, please carry a water bottle, wear a face-covering unless you are exempt, and follow social distancing guidelines.”

Even in hot conditions, it is vital that passengers wear a face covering for the duration of their journey to help protect themselves and others.

Neil Grabham, Customer Services Director at East Midlands Railway, said: “If the weather forecasts are to believed, the next few days will be very hot and we are looking forward to helping passengers make the most of it. However, we understand that people may be anxious about travelling at the moment, and hot weather can sometimes make people feel more uncomfortable – especially when they are required to wear a face covering.”

“That is why we are asking passengers to help us by making sure they are prepared for the heat and the other measures that are required when they travel by train at the moment. If you are using our services over the next few days, please make sure to leave plenty of time for your journey, remember to bring a face covering, and if possible, carry a water bottle. Please also be considerate of others by keeping a safe and sensible distance from other customers and our colleagues.

“We want all our passengers to enjoy the glorious weather predicted over the next few days and I hope with a few simple steps we can all stay safe this summer.”

  • I’ve seen some people wearing without no face masks on the trains and haven’t got a green “sunflower” exempt card which makes me so angry. But some have been caught out and have had no choice but to pay a fine for not wearing a face mask.
