Major upgrade work will be taking place this August Bank Holiday between the West Midlands and London to make journeys more reliable for passengers.

The multi-million-pound investment will see replace track and upgrade signalling on the ‘ corridor' as part of the Railway Upgrade Plan.

To maximise the amount of work which can be done between Saturday 29 and Monday 31 August 2020, the West Coast Main Line will be closed to trains between Rugby and Coventry.

With no direct trains running between Birmingham and London, passengers are being advised to travel before and after the railway closure.

The railway will be closed again on Sunday 6 September.

Dave Penney, director for Network Rail's Central route, said: “We know there is never a good time to close the railway, but when we do, we do as much work as possible to minimise disruption to passengers. This August bank holiday is no exception, particularly in the Coventry area, where multiple jobs will take place to help improve freight and passenger journeys.

“I'd urge people to plan ahead and try to travel before and after the bank holiday weekend. Anyone who plans to travel through Coventry should be prepared for their journey to be different to how it is normally so please check National Rail Enquiries for the latest information.”

  • I would like to see Coventry railway station to be rebuilt or redeveloped. It does need a big improvement. Including when Coventry is having it’s very own light rail transit in like 15 years time.

  • Should Coventry railway station be demolished and to be rebuilt with extra platforms and maybe a underpass or flyover for West Midlands Railway trains working on the Nuneaton-Leamington Spa line and Crosscountry trains to pass underneath or over the Birmingham-Coventry Line (West Coast Main Line). Could see that happening in the future.
